Essien spent nine seasons at Chelsea including a loan move to Real Madrid.
Baba becomes the third Ghanaian player to work under Mourinho after Essien at Chelsea and Real Madrid, and Sulley Muntari at Inter Milan.
Currently, Cesar Azpilicueta, who is naturally a right-back, operates at the left-back.
The sale of Felipe Luis to Atletico Madrid prompted the Blues to launch a serious search for a left-back.
Baba has recently become a regular in the Black Stars set-up. He played in all of Ghana’s matches at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where the Stars settled for silver behind Cote D’Ivoire.
