Viber adds end-to-end encryption to its messaging service.

Viber, which is a popular instant messaging and Voice-over-IP service provider with more than 700 million users, has implemented end-to-end encryption to protect its customers' communications against snooping.

The move comes after Facebook-owned WhatsApp turned on full end-to-end encryption earlier this month, bringing secure and private instant messaging into the mainstream.

Rolling out globally over the coming weeks, users will automatically be protected by end-to-end encryption in all communications on their smartphone once they have upgraded to the latest version of Viber – v6.0 or higher.

Once you get the update, you’ll see a a gray padlock that says you’re secure. These chats can only be accessed using a four digit PIN, providing an optional additional layer of privacy to users’ personal communications.

Users can also manually authenticate their Viber contacts and mark them as “trusted”, after which the contact will be marked with a green padlock icon.

The new Viber update also lets you hide sensitive chats behind fingerprint or 4-digit keypass protection. Taking user’s privacy seriously, the Viber app update will now also give users the ability to hide chats from the main chat list.
