Get ready for some serious destruction, Angry Birds fans. The highly anticipated sequel to the biggest mobile game of all time has arrived.
As promised, developer Rovio on Thursday launched Angry Birds 2, ushering in a "new era of addictive slingshot gameplay with stunning graphics, challenging multi-stage levels, scheming boss pigs, and even more destruction," according to the game's description. The free mobile title, available now for iOS and Android, keeps the slingshot format you know from other Angry Birds games, but Rovio says it has completely overhauled the visuals and gameplay with multiple stages in each level.
The new levels are "brimming with exotic plants, quirky details, fun animations, and plenty of peril." The piggies have also learned a thing or two about building rock-solid towers that will stand up to your assaults, making things even more challenging.
Fortunately, players will also have some new tricks and spells — including blizzards, magic ducks, and even hot chili peppers — to haul at the evil green piggies.
"Design technology has evolved dramatically since the original game launched in 2009," Rovio co-founder Niklas Hed said in a statement. "With Angry Birds 2 we wanted to bring a level of expressive depth and detail seen previously only in a console game or animated series — and create a new game that kids and adults alike won't be able to put down."
As for the cast of characters, some of your favorites are returning in Angry Birds 2, including Red, Chuck, Bomb, and the infamous King Pig, but there's also a new birdie on the block dubbed Silver, a "dazzling but strange young bird rescued from Pig City."
"Growing up in pig captivity, she has acquired porcine habits and an odd sense of humor," Rovio said. "But her incredible flying skills — and unique understanding of piggy ways — make her a cheeky and powerful new member of the flock."
For the first time ever, you can choose which bird to fly next. This won't necessarily make things easier — you'll have to "choose wisely if you're going to stop those eggs from getting scrambled," Rovio said. If all goes well, you'll be able to fill up the new "Destruct-O-Meter" to earn some extra birds. You can also now challenge players from around the world in the Arena, where you play until you run out of birds and spells.
