With a seven figure deal, Sony Pictures has won a bidding war to create the first feature length film starring emojis.
That's right, Sony is about to make a movie starring the little cartoon characters you text with. And Sony actually had to out-bid other major studios - both Paramount and Warner Bros. - to win the film pitch to make it.
But Paramount and Warner Bros. might not be the true losers in their lost bidding war with Sony. So far, Sony's proud cinematic announcement has been largely met with wise cracks and genuine disappointment about the state of cinema and pop culture
And with director Anthony Leondis, best known for his work on disappointing sequels Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, and Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters, slated to direct the film, the chances of it wowing audiences as a surprise cinema masterpiece are fairly dismal.
Leondis will be co-writing the film's script alongside Eric Siegel, who nobody's really ever heard of, but has apparently sold several shows to Fox and NBC and recently produced TBS series Men At Work.
The rest of the fate for emojis' big screen debut rests in the hands of producer Michelle Raimo Kouyate, whose best work includes Silver Linings Playbook, the remake of 1988 original Chocolat and Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots.
It is not clear who will be starring in the upcoming emoji extravaganza, but choice bets are on the smiling poop emoji. The eggplant, thumbs up and the yellow smiley are likely co-star candidates.
The emoji movie won't be Sony's first cell phone character-based movie. Angry birds, based off of the popular iPhone game is set to hit theaters this summer. Sony's new film Pixels, based off the 1980s video game's 2D characters, is already in theaters.
